We have an opening for a Group Leader for the W78 Replacement Warhead Group. You will provide professional leadership for a set of high-level technical activities, leading a group of professional and technical personnel, to provide project engineering to provide a replacement warhead for the W78. This position is in the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program, in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED).

This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide overall technical, safety, and security leadership to Program and group activities. Promote the technical competency and efficacy of the group while providing guidance and training to group members and Program personnel.
- Direct and assign work to group members and remain cognizant of the technical goals and progress of group projects, define, track, and complete work objectives on time and within budget in collaboration with group and LEP personnel.
- Provide W78 Replacement Warhead project with leadership in project development and execution, weapon engineering expertise, Design Agency (DA) oversight, qualification and certification work, assessments and special investigations, and preparations for eventual stockpile production, support, surveillance, and stewardship.
- Responsible for ensuring that program risks and requirements are communicated in an effective and timely manner to senior leadership.
- Represent WTE and WCI at meetings, briefings, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Lead engineering design reviews to ensure the highest quality of work.
- Provide day to day supervision, foster staff development, participate in hiring activities, prepare and conduct performance management activities for group personnel and contribute to the DTED ranking and salary management processes.
- Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables and lead corrective actions where necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers and serve on external scientific or technical committees, representing the Laboratory.
- Mentor staff across the organization, including other mentors.
- Serve as organization spokesperson by Laboratory management and/or external advisor by sponsors.

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience with engineering analysis and hardware design, fabrication, and testing processes along with experience working independently and responsively to changing priorities and ability to meet deadlines.
- Subject matter expert knowledge of nuclear warhead engineering, systems engineering, design processes, and extensive experience in formal design reviews and technical presentations.
- Expert knowledge of design applications and production issues related to the various Plants within the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) along with the ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, with other laboratories, and with personnel from external entities.
- Expertise with project management tools and techniques, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, analyzing and managing budgets, project controls reporting, and Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills, necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
- Significant leadership, interpersonal skills, organizational, and supervisory skills to lead personnel, write performance appraisals, and actively participate in ranking and hiring activities.
- Broad knowledge of Laboratory policies and practices and applicable NNSA orders and requirements.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Serve as a nationally recognized expert in engineering analysis and hardware design, fabrication, testing processes or Systems Engineering
- Expert knowledge of, and extensive experience in Surveillance, Engineering Evaluations, or Product Realization processes of designing, qualifying, and certification of nuclear weapon systems.
- Extensive experience and expert technical knowledge to address advancements that may have impact beyond the Laboratory or the ability to lead and develop personnel in cutting-edge technologies.

Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. 


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
