For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an engineer with core strengths in computational methods for supersonic and hypersonic flows to join the Thermal Fluids Group. The Thermal Fluids Group provides advanced engineering analysis support across all LLNL programs and is active in pursuing new business and external research opportunities. You will create and define new solutions and business opportunities where fundamental science and knowledge fusion can be applied to solve the most challenging problems facing the Laboratory. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide advanced engineering analysis and algorithm development support for supersonic and hypersonic computational modeling and simulation capabilities.
- Contribute engineering analysis support to cross-functional teams on research, design and application tasks.
- Contribute engineering analysis support to analysis, test and design efforts.
- Document results and findings for internal and external publication.
- Manage time and communication in a fast-paced, multitasking environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Lead projects in modeling, simulation and analysis projects and act as primary liaison to upper management and external collaborators.
- Lead proposal development teams for new R&D topics. Perform advanced R&D in numerical, analytical or experimental methods that support core competencies.
- Prepare and present key results in public journals and professional conferences.

- Master’s degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience in aerodynamics, fluid dynamics and numerical methods.
- Experience with modeling and simulation tools for turbulent and/or high-speed flows.
- Experience developing and applying advanced turbulence theory, large-eddy simulation and/or direct-numerical simulations.
- Experience with advanced C++, C and/or Fortran95 algorithm development.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with massively-parallel algorithm development and high-performance computing.
- Experience managing several concurrent tasks.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Experience working effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience in applied analysis of engineering physics.
- Experience leading and completing engineering design and analysis projects.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Publication list commensurate with ongoing professional growth and experience writing high-quality research proposals.
- Experience with conjugate heat transfer in aerospace applications and combustion and reactive chemistry.
- Experience with experiment design and data acquisition.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:  This is a Career Indefinite position.  Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
