For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Earth Scientist/Engineer to analyze and develop new options for reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. You will participate across all aspects of Livermore’s Carbon Initiative, analyzing the economic cost and carbon footprint of new systems, comparing them to existing and proposed approaches while focusing on how the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (CLCFS) and other statewide policies and initiatives can be used to incentivize such projects. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division

Essential Duties
- Analyze the technical and economic viability of climate-related technologies along with their carbon and environmental footprint.
- Direct and develop projects that analyze climate technologies and their impact under specific policy instruments such as the CLCFS and the federal renewable fuels mandate.
- Help create and lead a demonstration program for carbon capture and storage of fuel-related carbon dioxide in California.
- Provide overall management for both analytical and field demonstration projects of climate technology.
- Publish analysis and results of Carbon Initiative projects in peer reviewed literature.
- Lead and manage supporting personnel who conduct analysis under your direct supervision.
- Lead and develop teams to conduct and support technology demonstrations.
- Develop new work with Federal, State and commercial sponsors and partners in this area.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- PhD in environmental science, engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience in climate technology evaluation or development, as well as in carbon capture and storage.
- Significant experience managing projects and teams in energy and environmental work.
- Significant experience in environmental and climate technology policy analysis.
- Experience with California climate policy and technology programs, including detailed understanding of the CLCSF and the California Air Resources Board.
- Experience writing persuasive high-level documents describing how climate and environmental policies interact with technology.
- Experience working at a State, Federal and International level on climate technology development, analysis, or policy, including experience with technology programs at the U.S. Department of Energy
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors in English.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience in technoeconomic and life-cycle analysis of energy technologies.
- Experience developing new projects with State and Federal sponsors.
- Experience with policy evaluation and the interaction of policy and technology solutions.
