For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for Electro-Optics Technologists supporting Photonic Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) systems. You will work in a multidisciplinary team to develop, deploy, and maintain PDV systems for experimental activities at Livermore’s Site 300 or the High Explosives Applications Facility (HEAF). These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the 531.2 or 531.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Interact with scientific, operations, and engineering staff to perform experimental set-up and data acquisition of the PDV diagnostic.
- Perform maintenance, operation, repair, and upgrades of existing systems.
- Generate and maintain system documentation including operations procedures and electro-optical configuration drawings.
- Perform periodic maintenance activities on diagnostics.
- Acquire moderately complex data using computer-based data acquisition and controls.
- Produce supportive documentation and graphics using drafting, design, engineering, and scientific programs on computer systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 531.3 Level
- Analyze and post process raw data and provide written reports to Principle Investigators (PI’s).
- Interpret requirements for electro-optical assemblies.
- Serve as a technical lead for engineering principles to solve complex problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.

Qualifications
- Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Laser Electro-Optics, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience in electronic and/or electro-optics design and/or fabrication & assembly.
- Intermediate skills and knowledge of electronics and/or electro-optics technology.
- Experience working with high speed digitizers/oscilloscopes.
- Experience in safe work and business practices.
- Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Possess effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and other protective equipment, perform moderate work while wearing full-face or half-mask respirators, and ability to maintain required qualifications and certifications (i.e. Explosives Handler, Rad Worker (II), Beryllium Worker, and Human Reliability Program (HRP)).
In Addition at the 531.3 Level
- Advanced skills and understanding of electronics and/or electro-optical technology with the ability to design complex systems and solutions to problems under minimal supervision and providing technical direction to others.
- Advanced skills with electro-optical assemblies and precision laser alignment operations.
- High-level technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve complex problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with classified materials and experimental data and/or experience as working with high explosives and initiation systems.
- Experience with engineering software tools such as SolidWorks, CREO, LabView, or MATLAB.
- Experience working with radiological materials and associated controls.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
