For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for Postdoctoral Research Staff Members to conduct original and independent research in boundary layer transition or thermal protection systems in the context of hypersonic flight mechanics, real gas effects, and high temperature ablating wall conditions. You will analyze flight vehicles over a range of conditions requiring multi-physics modeling across disciplines. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Conduct original research in one or more of the following areas: boundary layer transition, high enthalpy fluid mechanics, ablating Thermal Protection Systems.
- Design, implement, and analyze techniques in one or more of the above areas.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Aerospace Engineering or related field.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: real gas effects, boundary layer transition, high temperature ablating wall effects.
- Ability to perform as an innovative researcher with a broad range of experience in theoretical methods, development of corresponding numerical techniques, and implementation.
- Experience developing independent research projects, including publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Effective initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience in developing and running massively parallel codes (MPI), and familiarity with software development in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments.
- Experience with experimental techniques and instrumentation related to high enthalpy wind tunnels and other related testing, particularly as it relates to transition.
- Experience using large-scale codes to provide detailed simulation studies for verification and validation (V&V) analysis of algorithms and integrated codes and experience in the development of the V&V and Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) methodology. 

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
