For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to perform statistical and predictive analyses of environmental and medical microbiome data using bioinformatics and machine learning techniques. This position is in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research and development on microbiological and molecular detection data, such as whole metagenome DNA sequencing, amplicon sequencing, RNA-Seq, and DNA microarray.
- Research, design, and implement analysis techniques and computing approaches to enhance sensitivity of microbial detection via sequencing and microarray protocols.
- Apply statistical analyses, predictive modeling and machine learning to a diverse range of next generation sequencing datasets.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research at seminars, technical meetings, national and international conferences.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment and other national laboratories and industry to accomplish research goals.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook including complete records of experiments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology, molecular microbiology or a related field.
- Experience in developing and applying new bioinformatics software tools to solve problems in computational genomics.
- Experience in programming skills (UNIX, Python, R) and experience with scientific computing applications for genomics as well as experience in genomic sequence analysis and data visualization.
- Familiarity with R and/or scikit-learn packages for clustering, classification and regression modeling.
- Experience with high-dimensional data sets, multiple testing corrections and power analysis.
- Experience in the identification of complex problems and solutions in a creative and timely manner.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with metagenomic sequence analysis and microarray probe design.
- Experience in molecular techniques including sample preparation, nucleic acid extraction and amplification, DNA sequencing, DNA microarrays and multiplexed assays.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
