For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Waste Certification Program (WCP) Assistant to provide technical support for the WCP. Under general supervision you will monitor compliance with DOE requirements associated with radioactive waste packaging, characterization, storage, and disposal to provide advanced expertise on complex radioactive and hazardous waste management issues. This position is in the Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management (RHWM) Program.

Essential Duties
- Regular contact with a variety of personnel that are both internal and external to LLNL, including field personnel, technical staff, senior management, DOE Livermore Field Office, DOE Nevada Field Office, DOE Headquarters, commercial vendors, and regulatory agencies to develop solutions for complex waste management issues.
- Develop, review and approve waste profiles for DOE and commercial treatment and disposal facilities.
- Review, analyze, and approve complex waste characterization plans for radioactive, mixed, and classified waste streams.
- Manage and track the calibration of critical measuring and test equipment, including coordination with off-site vendors.
- Support audits and assessments of waste generators and critical WCP elements.
- Interpret State and Federal regulations (e.g., Department of Transportation (DOT), -Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) as they apply to the characterization of hazardous and radioactive wastes.
- Certify radioactive, mixed, and classified wastes for disposal at the NNSS and commercial facilities.
- Collaborate with radioactive waste generators, field technicians, and environmental analysts to provide technical guidance and original solutions for the characterization, packaging, and management of radioactive wastes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental or related scientific field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Fundamental knowledge of DOE requirements as they apply to radioactive waste characterization, packaging, and disposal.
- Experience interpreting state and federal regulations to ensure compliance with treatment and disposal facility requirements, specifically those relating to hazardous waste management and transportation.
- Highly skilled in interpreting complex chemical and radiological data to determine waste characterization and treatment methods.
- Significant technical experience evaluating data to make decisions on waste certification activities.
- Ability to successfully complete all Federal, State, LLNL and DOT training requirements.
- Advanced organization skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and follow through.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
