For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have openings for Engineering Technical Associates in support of the National Ignition Facility (NIF).  You will work in a multidisciplinary team to produce complex and unique precision components and assemblies.  Specific assignments include design, manufacturing activities, evaluation, review, testing, assembly, R&D, and documentation of processes.   These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.
 
Essential Duties

- Independently complete advanced tasks such as high precision manufacturing, assembly, and metrology of small components and unique materials.
- Apply innovative technical expertise to evaluation, operation, and maintenance of complex precision machining operations in the NIF Facility.
- Develop/design system enhancements to increase reliability and maintainability.
- Design, install, and test assembly fixtures and machine tooling
- Employ and tailor R&D machining and testing, troubleshooting, and equipment installation methods to solve complex technical problems on unique and challenging materials and provide original solutions.
- Make frequent decisions using independent discretion and judgment to provide original solutions to establish or modify techniques and procedures.
- Provide advanced technical advice and direction to mentor others.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing technology or equivalent combination of education and related experience in a technical or engineering field.
- Advanced knowledge and experience with materials, equipment, or technologies associated with high precision manufacturing, including single point diamond turning, micro-milling, and CNC machine programming.
- Experience interacting with and satisfying customer needs in a highly technical setting.
- Advanced skills and understanding of precision assembly techniques and metrology.
- Advanced experience with applied use of CAD/computer design packages.
- Experience participating in engineering testing operations and analyzing results.
- Experience working independently as part of a multi-disciplinary team/project environment, with simultaneous commitments to performance, cost, and schedule.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner for presentation and interaction with other technical staff members.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience working with classified materials, experimental data, and documentation.
- Knowledge of ASME Y14.5M Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standard.
- QA/QC documentation skills used in an engineering environment.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
