For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member in the field of experimental circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) for quantum computation, information, and simulation.  You will work in a rapidly growing field to design and deploy resource efficient quantum hardware to demonstrate quantum algorithms for quantum simulation, multi-physics applications, and distributed quantum computing. This position is in the Quantum Coherent Device Physics group in the Condensed Matter Section of the Physics Division.

Essential Duties
- Design, characterize, and utilize state-of-the-art superconducting quantum hardware.
- Advance the current state-of-the-art in open quantum systems control.
- Configure, implement, and troubleshoot synchronized, pulsed radio frequency quantum control systems.
- Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in international conferences.
- Present formal and informal overview of research progress at weekly meetings.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in experimental physics or a related field.
- Hands on experience characterizing and controlling many body quantum systems such as superconducting devices, trapped atomic ions, nitrogen vacancy centers, optical lattices, and quantum dots.
- Knowledge in quantum optics especially in its applications for quantum computation.
- Proficient in computer programming languages such as python or C/C++ especially when used for simulation of open quantum system hardware with QuTIP or other open source quantum software.
- Ability to work independently on technical tasks, influence technical objectives, to provide in depth analysis, and develop unique technical solutions.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers and other technical and administrative staff.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment, prepare written reports and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with digital signal processing and advanced data analysis techniques.
- Experience in Radio Frequency electronics both hands on as well as modeling in packages such as ANSYS’ HFSS.
- Experience with numerical optimization on quantum systems or quantum optimal control.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
