For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Process Improvement Engineer.  You will serve as an internal technical consultant and advisor for strategic, organizational, and institutional level process design and improvements.  You will use formal engineering quality assurance practices, Lean Six Sigma methodologies and analytical tools to analyze data, characterize, measure performance, and optimize integration of quality management elements into technical and administrative processes.  This position is in the Management Assurance System Organization.

This position will be filled at either the TSS.3 or TSS.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Lead scientific and technical Process Improvement Project teams; facilitate data collection and analysis to identify recommendations for reducing defects and waste and improve effectiveness and efficiency of work processes.
- Lead strategic gap analysis and formal assessments to assist process owners and managers in the identification of key work activities requiring process management systems.
- Identify opportunities for new and/or continuing performance improvement initiatives through the application of advanced engineering and/or scientific concepts, techniques, and standards based on Lean/Six Sigma principles and theories.
- Develop and maintain institutional process and performance metrics that monitor the success and performance of Quality Assurance Engineering and Lean/Six Sigma Process Improvement Projects and ensure delivery of on time and high-quality services and products that are suitable for the intended use and compliant with all contract specifications.
- Ensure overall integration of program goals with technical requirements, costs, and policy considerations and collaborates with management to resolve barriers and issues. Ensures process owners and managers are informed of the progress of the team.
- Effectively summarize and communicate evaluation results and recommendations to team members, all levels of Laboratory management and Livermore Field Office (LFO). Document work products and recommendations.
- Develop and deliver innovative training materials and exercises to Laboratory managers and workforce. Coach and mentor staff across the institution in the implementation of Quality Assurance Engineering and Lean and Six Sigma principles, practices, tools, and methodologies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the TSS.4 Level
- Evaluate program conditions and define implementable suggestions for improvements that can affect the overall performance of the organization.
- Present results of projects successes to senior level management at LLNL and LFO demonstrating expert knowledge of process improvement and correlating the importance of the project to mission of the organizations impacted by the identified changes.
- Oversee others in implementation of process improvement at a graded level within assigned organizations to facilitate the application of process improvement across LLNL in a bottoms up approach.

- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, computer, physical or biological sciences, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge and related experience.
- Completion of formal training and certification in Six Sigma data driven approaches and methodologies with the ability to obtain professional certification as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt within a reasonable timeframe. - Advanced knowledge of and significant experience applying Quality Assurance Engineering techniques including Lean Six Sigma in conjunction with engineering and/or scientific concepts, principles, methods, tools, and techniques to complex, integrated technical projects.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge and significant experience analyzing data using statistical applications, empirical Bayesian methods, Principal Component Analysis.
- Experience establishing effective working relationships with program/sponsor organizations, operations management, professional colleagues and customer representatives.
- Significant experience influencing decisions and actions in an environment highly resistant to change.
- Advanced verbal and written communication, presentation and facilitation skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
In Addition at the TSS.4 Level
- Subject matter expert in Lean and Six Sigma processes.
- Significant experience directing multi-faceted and parallel technical tasks in order to solve highly complex issues, decisions in a heavily regulated environment.
- Significant experience leading and/or performing collaborative tasks with a diverse group of professional disciplines and highly technical staff across organizational, complex wide and external boundaries including federal, state and DOE regulations and directives.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of LLNL operational, programmatic, or science and technology efforts.
- Professional certification as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt
- Extensive experience supporting complex scientific projects that involve computational and statistical analysis of very large datasets using tools such as Bayes analysis, Principal Component Analysis, Hidden Markov Models and network theory.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
