For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for junior and senior undergraduate and graduate level students and recent bachelors or masters level graduates within one year the opportunity to engage in practical experience to further their educational goals.  You will have the chance to support engineering projects involving research, conceptual design, analysis, or technology development. If you are energetic and enthusiastic with knowledge and interest in at least one of these skill areas: modeling and simulation, mechanical, electrical, systems, materials, manufacturing, or test engineering this internship could be a good match for you. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) supporting the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principal Directorate.  

Essential Duties

 At the Undergraduate Level (Non-Exempt):
- Work directly with a mentor in your field of study while finding solutions to real world problems.
- Under close supervision, participate in research in assigned area.
- Gather and analyze data or information in support of engineering research.
- Document and communicate results of technical data generated.
- Share engineering information and promote open dialogue.
- Attend relevant seminars.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the Graduate and Recent Grad Level (Exempt)
- Under limited direction and supervision will conduct research in assigned area.
- Perform technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to engineers in research and development projects.

 

Qualifications

 At the Undergraduate Level (Non-Exempt)
- Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing an undergraduate degree in Engineering or other related fields.
- Ability to work full-time for 10-12 weeks during the summer.
- A track record of outstanding academic performance.
- Eagerness to contribute in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment.
- Must have excellent leadership, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.

In Addition at the Graduate and Recent Grad Level (Exempt):
- Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a graduate degree in engineering or a related field or a recent graduate within one year.
- Experience applying advanced engineering principles to solve technical problems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction, however able to work in team and collaborative environment as well.

Desired Qualifications
- GPA of 3.5 or above
- Technical project experience, internships, leadership experience

 

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  None required.

 

Note:   This is a Temporary Student Intern appointment.  This assignment is for a full-time position during the summer academic break; a co-op position, full-time during the academic semester/quarter, or a year-round part-time position during the academic year and full time during academic breaks.
