For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for experienced Spacecraft Systems Engineers to work on projects and initiatives with a focus on U.S. national security. You will be a member of an engineering team that will provide space mission engineering solutions for both national security and basic science investigations with sponsors including NASA, Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) and other government agencies. As an engineering team member, you will work on all aspects of space system hardware – from design and analysis to assembly, integration and test. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate at LLNL.

This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Work as an integral part of a small team of scientists and engineers to develop technical proposals for spacecraft missions including payload specifications, spacecraft definition, orbit definition, spacecraft subsystem specification, launch and operation design and planning, system trade studies, and cost and schedule estimates.
- Apply advanced engineering knowledge to develop models and run configuration trades on the spacecraft and payload subsystems.
- Direct efforts in attitude determination and control for the spacecraft engineering team and develop, maintain and provide validation of spacecraft simulation and maneuvering models.
- Contribute to complex mission planning efforts including design and analysis of spacecraft trajectories and develop operational concepts to meet mission requirements.
- Lead spacecraft subsystems integrated test planning and execution.
- Provide advanced technical direction to small teams and work as the primary spacecraft technical contact.
- Collaborate within a team of scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, and procurement personnel to achieve project goals.
- Interface with customer organizations, payload science experts, analysts, manufacturing engineers, and project staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition, at the SES.4 Level
- Apply advanced engineering solutions and technical analysis to develop and implement creative solutions to resolve highly complex technical and programmatic issues.
- Set broad research/project vision and lead a team supporting spacecraft launch and early operations, maintaining spacecraft health and safety, optimizing performance, and troubleshooting anomalies.
- Lead mission planning functions, including design and analysis of spacecraft trajectories, operational concepts for multiple missions and ground operations teams including software requirements.

- Master’s degree in aeronautical/aerospace engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant aerospace and/or spacecraft engineering experience with designing, assembling or testing flight hardware.
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience with one or more of the following spacecraft systems and subsystems: attitude, propulsion, power, data handling and on-board processing, thermal, structures and mechanisms, TT&C, and payload.
- Significant experience estimating cost and schedule of spacecraft projects.
- Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary project team that may include engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians.
- Demonstrated ability to devise solutions for complex problems that require in-depth analysis of tangible and intangible factors.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information to colleagues, management or sponsors.
In addition, at the SES.4 Level
- Subject matter expert knowledge of highly advanced concepts related to aerospace and/or spacecraft engineering and demonstrated experience leading the development of proposals to meet space mission customer requirements.
- Significant experience and demonstrated track record of success developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex multi-disciplinary problems and leading corrective actions where necessary.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple parallel tasks, often requiring the resolution of conflicting work requirements and prioritization of tasks toward predetermined long-range targets.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD degree in aeronautical/aerospace engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of space mission engineering principles and practices and their application.
- Experience in optical system analysis and design in either laser or imaging systems. Significant experience with design/analysis software such as AGI STK, dynamic vibration finite element analysis, or spacecraft thermal analysis.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
