For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for experienced Laser Engineers and Scientists. You will research, design, develop, analyze, model, test, and field advanced laser technology and systems in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF & PS) Directorate. Areas of specialization include: solid state laser physics and technology, femtosecond and picosecond short pulse generation and amplification, temporal pulse stretching and compression, Joule to Mega-Joule class picosecond through nanosecond pulse amplification, nonlinear effects; sensors and instrumentation; systems engineering; laser performance modeling; and documentation. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Research, design, and develop high energy pulsed laser systems and technologies incorporating essential new physics to support evolving missions.
- Conduct experiments in the fields of short pulse, high power, and energy laser physics.
- Execute and interpret laser experiments that test new physics and modeling capability in collaboration with laboratory scientists and engineers.
- Define and prioritize tasks and goals to ensure that programmatic needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Design complex  commissioning of novel laser diagnostics to be used on high energy and/or short pulse lasers and laser systems.
- Set technical strategy and work  as  a technical expert on a team interacting with mid-level and senior management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Independently manage project scope, schedule, and budget.
- Serve as Subject Matter Expert in identified areas and the primary technical contact, provide strategic technical advice to senior management and/or sponsors across the Laboratory on advanced technical projects.  Participate on relevant committees that decide laser design, deployment, and utilization issues.
-Write and submit research and development proposals.

- Master’s degree in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Advanced knowledge in solid state and/or fiber lasers, femto, pico, and nanosecond short pulse laser physics, amplification, laser pulse characterization, and nonlinear optics.
- Significant experience designing, building, testing, and optimizing performance of pulsed laser systems based on regenerative and multipass amplifier architectures.
- Significant experience working independently with minimal direction and as a member of a multidisciplinary team, and demonstrated ability to lead advanced research and development activities.
- Significant record of accomplishment in scientific research and development.
- Demonstrated advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, decision making, and analytical skills necessary to independently anticipate, analyze, advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions to complex issues.
- Experience planning and directing work with technical objectives, estimating effort, setting milestones, and managing within designated budget.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to author technical and scientific reports and publications, deliver scientific presentations, and interact with a diverse group.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Significant experience and subject matter expert knowledge of highly advanced concepts in the areas of kilojoule or large pulsed laser systems and diagnostics.
- Significant project management experience on highly complex mid-to-large scale projects.
- Successful track record of publications in refereed journals as the primary author.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering.
- Knowledge in Joule-class short pulse lasers and amplifiers.
- Knowledge in high average power solid state laser technology.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
