For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to design instrumentation and develop unique spectroscopic methods at the intersection of applied photonics and biochemistry. Your work will include: designing and building laser spectrometers, construction and application of high-speed data acquisition systems, theoretical modeling of underlying physical phenomena, and dissemination of scientific findings. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division.

Essential Duties
- Design instrumentation and analyze experimental data for the detection of rare-isotopes and chemical species in small bio-biological/biochemical samples.
- Design, implement, and troubleshoot optical, laser, and electronic systems.
- Develop spectroscopic models to interpret experiment data.
- Refine analytical procedures to separate and measure target chemical species.
- Collaborate with other team members in the design, implementation, and qualification of cutting-edge R&D systems.
- Publish research results in internal reports, peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals, and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook including complete records of experiments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related field.
- Experience simulating classical and/or quantum spectroscopic models.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: lasers, optics, photonics, high-finesse cavities, nonlinear optics, ultrafast diagnostics, high-speed RF electronics, photonic analog/digital conversion, digital signal processing, and/or related experience.
- Experience with analytical measurement techniques.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution; ability to understand and analyze experimental results (including computational experimental control and data analysis e.g., python, C, C++, R, Verilog, Labview, or equivalent).
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research environment, both independently and in a team environment with a diverse technical staff.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment, and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience programing and designing field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) and other highspeed, data-acquisition hardware
- Experience with heterodyne, wavelength-modulation, cavity-ring-down, cavity-enhanced/locking, direct-frequency-comb, and/or other related spectroscopic techniques.
- Experience with liquid chromatography, microfluidics, flow-cytometry, matrix-assisted-laser-desorption/ionization, pulse-chase isotopic tracers, and/or other related biochemistry techniques.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
