For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for Division Superintendents.  You will be responsible for the effective management and leadership of a large and diverse workforce consisting of electronics, mechanical, and operations technical personnel who support the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Principal Directorate and the Jupiter Laser Facility (JLF).  This assignment represents the administrative management and leadership aspects of the role and is partially funded (25 – 50%).  You will be expected to maintain a full-time programmatic project role/assignment with the remainder of your time in the NIF & PS Directorate.  This position is in Laser Systems Engineering and Operations Division (LSEO), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
-  Provide highly advanced technical and/or administrative management and leadership in the direction of programmatic mechanical support to significant NIF&PS projects.  
-  Ensure performance standards and classification levels are consistently applied across the Division.  Independently assess the needs of projects or solve complex administrative and technical problems to meet organizations objectives.
- Work with and under the direction of the Associate Division Leader to manage and mentor technical supervisors in the accomplishment of technical work objectives.  Through Division Group Leaders and Supervisors manage a workforce that includes engineering associates, designers, technologists, and coordinators.
- Provide direction to and oversight of non-exempt, and exempt, personnel actions such as hiring, performance appraisals, ranking and salary administration, promotions, and corrective actions.
- Serve as a member on the Engineering Exempt Review Board to review candidates for entry into, and promotions within, the 300 Exempt Series.
- Establish and implement succession and workforce planning goals for the technical workforce.
- Participate in the formulation, interpretation, and implementation of policies and procedures.
- Ensure adherence to the Laboratory's ES&H, security, business practices, and personnel policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electronics, mechanical or laser electro-optic engineering technology or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Highly advanced skills and experience in electronics, mechanical, or laser electro-optic technology.
- Broad and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Engineering non-exempt and exempt personnel policies and procedures, promotion process, and exempt review criteria.
- Significant experience in workforce planning, coaching and mentoring staff members, preparation of performance reviews, ranking, salary management, and hiring activities.
- Experience interacting with division and department level management.
- Experience working as a team member with professional and technical personnel or on an independent self-directed basis.
- Recognized as a technical expert within a specialized area in one or more technologies in the work unit.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated successful complex problem resolution and negotiating skills.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. 

 

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
