For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have a position in the Design Physics Division for an Associate Program Leader for Nuclear Weapons Enterprise Evaluation and Planning. You will lead a group of researchers and analysts developing and exercising sophisticated modeling and simulation tools to understand the stockpile program. You will oversee simulation capabilities spanning forward models looking at stockpile requirement, infrastructure condition and availability as well as nuclear weapon critical skills. You will lead evaluation and planning activities focused on support of headquarter planning processes including CEAG, JOWOG, IPG/SMMP, CRISP, CAPAX, Deep Dive processes, and provide critical data to support decision making. You will lead the Nuclear Enterprise Working Group (NEWG). You will report administratively to the Design Physics Deputy Division Leader and programmatically to the Weapons Infrastructure Program Leader.

Essential Duties
- Develop and implement enterprise modeling capability plans including database and simulation code development.
- Provide strategic leadership and direction for Nuclear Security Enterprise studies involving the program of record and scenario of options.
- Leads a team, program/project, or function that impacts Laboratory resources with a technical focus.
- Participate in the development of advance modeling and analysis capabilities, in effective collaboration with Labs and Plants.
- Support interagency studies related to the U.S. nuclear weapons enterprise.
- Provide technical leadership, management, planning, and support of activities for special studies as directed by senior laboratory leadership.
- Develop and maintain communication, facilitation, collaboration, interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills necessary to direct an organization, lead innovative initiatives, build cooperative multi-disciplinary teams and interact with management, multidisciplinary teams, external collaborators, and sponsors.
- Prepare and submit quarterly reports regarding activities, plans and goals to stakeholders, which include the appropriate Federal Program Managers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- PHD in science or engineering or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Expert knowledge of simulation and optimization computational methodologies.
- Experience analyzing elements of nuclear security program of record and experience in evaluation in analysis of major NNSA stockpile programs.
- Substantial experience collaborating with the Department of Defense.
- Expert problem-solving and analytical skills to address highly complex issues that require mature judgment, discretion, and tact, and experience successfully negotiating desirable outcomes.
- Complex project management expertise, including expert negotiation, presentation, and pedagogical skills.
- Experience leading a team, project, and/or group, as well as experience with performance management and experience develop and administer budgets.
- Working knowledge of capital planning and infrastructure.

Desired Qualifications
- Extensive experience leading innovative initiatives, building cooperative multi-disciplinary teams and interacting with management, multidisciplinary teams, external collaborators, and sponsors.
- Extensive experience developing technical proposals.
- Established scientific contributions and external recognition, demonstrated by a publication record or other professional activities.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. 

 

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
