For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Principal Deputy Principal Associate Director (PDPAD) for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. You will be responsible for managing day-to-day activities of the PAD office, working with the PAD and senior NIF&PS management to address strategic issues across the Directorate. You will provide management assistance to the PAD Program Directors/Managers and assume PAD responsibilities when the PAD is out of the office. You will interact regularly with senior management and executives at the highest level, both internal and external, including government officials and major customers/sponsors. This position reports to the NIF&PS Principal Associate Director.


Essential Duties

- Overall responsibility for the management and direction of the operations of the NIF PAD office; this includes planning, staffing, budgeting, and the development of policies.

- Responsible for formulation and management of the Program Management Charge (PMC) budget that funds the activities of the PAD office.

- Develop and maintain critical key partnerships across the Laboratory and with major internal and external stakeholders, government agencies and corporate sponsors.

- Partner with NIF& PS senior executives to set strategic direction, approaches and plans for PAD programs and functional areas, ensuring successful PAD and Laboratory mission deliverables are achieved.

- Perform the duties of the Principal Associate Director during times of absence.

- Responsible for the general oversight and personal commitment to the goals of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Safeguards and Security Management, compliance with all ES&H regulations, good business practices, diversity and equal opportunity.

- Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

- Master’s degree in Engineering, Science, or related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience and extensive experience resolving complex problems and developing, planning and coordinating solutions.

- In-depth knowledge of Laboratory or NNSA/related agency’s mission, strategies and specialized functions with significant ability in establishing objectives and long-term goals.

- Extensive experience successfully managing and directing scientific and/or technical programs and large, diverse multidisciplinary teams in the expansion and application of theoretical research and in the design, development and implementation of innovative concepts and promotion of new ideas.

- Extensive experience effectively managing large-scale budgets and projects, negotiating resource allocation amid conflicting priorities, and in delivering programmatic results.  Demonstrated effective leadership, strategic planning and management skills in a scientific research and development environment.

- Extensive experience building positive working relationships with a broad cross-section of management, technical and administrative personnel.  Experience directing Technical Managers in the expansion and application of research and operations and in the design, development and implementation of innovative concepts and promotion of new ideas.

- Extensive experience interacting, negotiating, and collaborating effectively at the executive level with internal and/or external managers, customers and sponsors.  Proven ability to influence change at the senior executive management level.

 - Experience as an effective strategic and innovative thinker who anticipates the needs of a large, diverse community and formulates and executes decisions within the framework of the strategic direction.

- Expert verbal and written communications skills facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise executive management and external sponsors on a wide-range of topic areas.


Desired Qualifications

- PhD. in Engineering, Science or related technical field.

- Extensive technical knowledge of, and/or experience with NIF&PS programs.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.
 
If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.  In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clerances requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be process/granted.
