For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in relativistic heavy-ion physics and study ultra-peripheral collisions and jet quenching observables measured by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and planned for the sPHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider.  You will maintain close collaboration with the theory community through the JETSCAPE collaboration that has begun exploring topics for future research at the Electron Ion Collider.  You will develop a research program commensurate with these activities with the overall goal of improving our understanding of the physics of dense quark/gluon matter.  This position is in the Nuclear & Particle Physics group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

Essential Duties
- Perform analysis of experimental data obtained with ATLAS.
- Provide technical contributions to the development of sPHENIX.
- Apply expertise in relativistic heavy-ion physics to improve theory and experiment through the development and/or use of the JETSCAPE framework.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in nuclear physics, particle physics, or related field.
- Knowledge of heavy-ion physics and demonstrated interest in hard probes.
- Experience with complex data analysis and high-performance computing.
- Experience programming in C++ and/or other programming language.
- Experience performing analysis using ROOT and GEANT.
- Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, present and explain technical information, and prepare and deliver written reports.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
