For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an Engineering Design Associate to support the NIF&PS Directorate within the NIF Operations group as a CAD integrator.  You will work independently with general direction, establish scope of work, provide advanced technical support with the interpretation, verification and definition of CAD data while advising on the placement of hardware and systems to minimize impact to the NIF target bay, laser bays, and switchyards.  You will solve complex to highly complex technical problems, regularly collaborating with scientists, engineers, and senior staff, both internal and external to NIF. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Apply innovative technical expertise to integration planning of complex NIF mechanical engineering systems, primarily target diagnostics equipment requiring critical placement within the target bay and chamber.
- Collect shrink wrapped Creo and Intergraph CAD models and transform them into VisionaryRender compatible integrated models and presentations. Top down investigations of legacy Creo CAD models to verify as-built conditions and the ability to uncover and maintain documentation in the Windchill/ELM configuration management (CM) system.
- Present, author, critically review, and oversee the development of written procedures, reports, and equipment placement recommendations.
- Prioritize, plan, organize, and conduct multiple projects.
-Provide technical advice and direction to senior staff, scientists, and design task leads using independent discretion and judgment.
- Monitor, maintain, and anticipate integration technology for the NIF Directorate, including integration models, integration software, and forward-looking planning for fly thru and virtual reality hardware.
- Develop simulations suitable for training field technicians and providing environmental simulation for experiment planning teams.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 339.2 Level
- Lead a technical team, assign tasks, define approaches, create and implement original solutions, oversee work; extensive technical, administrative and supervisory authority, responsible for training requirements.
- Plan, organize, budget, and lead multiple projects of significant scope and present formalized reports and presentations to management and outside collaborators.
- Contribute to Engineering Directorate and Institutional tasks, such as developing policies and procedures and participating on committees.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical technology or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
- Significant applied experience with Creo Parametric, VisionaryRender, and virtual reality software.
- Experience working in Windchill Product Lifecycle Management software.
- Demonstrated ability to make independent technical decisions that may have significant consequences to broad segments and/or sections of a major project.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate both individual activities, along with those of others, with multiple components requiring attention to detail, accuracy, and independent follow-through.
- Advanced technical and leadership skills.
- Advanced knowledge of the transformation of different coordinate systems, 3D survey point clouds, and advanced geometric analysis.
- Demonstrated advanced written and verbal communication skills and presentation skills.
In Addition at the 339.2 Level
- Extensive leadership experience, developing staffing plans, performance reviews, promotional recommendations, and disciplinary actions.
- Extensive experience with planning, organizing, budgeting, and leading multiple projects of significant scope; making independent fundamental decisions regarding variable technical problems and a demonstrated ability to meet project requirements and deadlines.
- Extensive experience in the application of highly advanced concepts in coordinate systems, 3D survey point clouds, advanced geometric analysis and in applying advanced drafting practices and fabrication techniques.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with project management methods and tools.

 

 

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
