For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Software Engineer to develop diagnostic control software for the National Ignition Facility (NIF), the largest and most energetic laser in the world. You will work closely with other engineers and scientists to enable groundbreaking research using the NIF laser. This position is in the NIF Computing Division within the Computation Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Design, implement and test application software that operators will use to control NIF equipment, adhering to design and development conventions established by the NIF software team.
- Perform software engineering using object-oriented analysis, design, and programming techniques, and participate in formal and informal design and code reviews.
- Apply configuration management on all development artifacts.
- Collaborate with all stakeholders, including NIF operations staff, during the software development process.
- Deliver scope on schedule to meet program milestones.
- Provide solutions to complex hardware/software integration problems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Develop innovative approaches for instrument control and improvements to the NIF diagnostic control framework.
- Investigate industry trends in scientific instrument control and collaborate with diagnostic engineers to provide direction and strategy for future diagnostic and controls development.
- Lead formal and informal design reviews of diagnostic control software changes and enhancements.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Broad experience with the software engineering process: generation of requirements and design documents, coding under configuration control, and integration.
- Experience programming in an object-oriented programming language such as Java, C#, or C++.
- Broad experience developing multi-threaded/multi-tasking applications.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and prepare, present, and document technical information to various audiences.
- Broad experience designing, developing and deploying software for hardware control, including debugging with hardware instrumentation.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Significant experience successfully designing and deploying software solutions.
- Significant experience developing multi-threaded/multi-tasking applications.
- Significant experience developing software for hardware control.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
