For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member within the Ultrafast Optical & Electronic Systems Group. The group consists of a diverse team of scientists and engineers with expertise in:  lasers, optics, photonics, nonlinear optics, ultrafast diagnostics, high speed / ultra-wideband RF electronics, photonic analog/digital conversion, digital signal processing, simulation and modeling. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in and development of optical, laser, photonic, and/or electronic systems for various applications in ultrafast sources and diagnostics, arbitrary waveform generation, sensing, and high-speed instrumentation.
- Design, implement, and analyze experiments and/or perform end-to-end modeling of novel system designs.
- Collaborate with other team members in the design, implementation, and qualification of cutting edge R&D systems.
- Work closely with engineers, technicians, and integration experts from LLNL and its sponsors in all aspects of system development.
- Publish research results in internal reports, peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals, and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: lasers, optics, photonics, nonlinear optics, ultrafast diagnostics, high-speed / ultra-wideband RF electronics, photonic analog/digital conversion, digital signal processing, simulation and/or modeling.
- Demonstrated ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with ultrafast laser sources, fiber optic equipment, and/or RF equipment.
- Experience with Matlab.
- Experience mentoring student researchers.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
