For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to participate in the research, development and modeling of advanced solid-state laser technology in support of the world class laser fusion driver at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). You will have the unique opportunity to conduct laser experiments to further our understanding of various optical nonlinearities in laser glass and crystalline media with the goal to expand the NIF laser system modeling and performance. This position is in the Laser Modeling & Analysis Group within the Laser Science and Systems Engineering Program in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Principal (NIF & PS) Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Plan, execute and model experiments that are relevant to advancing the NIF laser performance with emphasis on off-line characterization of optical nonlinearities in laser glass and crystalline media.
- Collaborate with Laboratory scientists and engineers to execute and interpret experiments on the NIF laser with the goal to expand the NIF laser system modeling and performance.
- Define and prioritize tasks and goals to ensure programmatic needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Prepare advanced written and oral presentations on assigned projects.
- Work within a dynamic team environment to document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, perform oral presentation internally and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Laser Physics, Nonlinear Optics Optical Sciences, or related field or discipline.
- Significant experience in scientific research and development with a demonstrated record of accomplishment.
- Significant experience in optics, laser science, and/or scientific code development.
- Experience in problem solving, troubleshooting, decision making, and analytical skills necessary to conduct and model experiments for the characterization of optical nonlinearities or laser performance.
- Effective interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, other technical and administrative staff, and managers.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, prepare written reports, and provide advice to management.

Desired Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with laser and nonlinear optics experimental laboratory techniques.
- Experience modeling of experiments, signal and image processing.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
