For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to perform theory and simulation research relevant to areas of plasma and combustion physics. You will develop new modeling capabilities and the application of those capabilities addressing high priority problems in multiple application areas, including plasma thrusters, laser plasma accelerators, and high explosives. The work will be performed within the LLNL Fusion Energy Sciences Program’s Applied Plasma/EM Simulations group in the Physics Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in the areas of interest centered around plasma and combustion physics.
- Design and implement simulation models to advance plasma and combustion physics in one or more application areas.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Physics or a related discipline.
- Experience developing fluid and/or kinetic plasma modeling codes.
- Experience applying such codes to carry out research in plasma and/or combustion physics.
- Experience on high-performance computing platforms.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Initiative, interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Proficiency in C++, Fortran, MPI, OpenMP, Python, and/or other scripting language programming.
- Knowledge of advanced numerical methods related to PIC and/or fluid methods.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  None required.

 

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
