We have an opening for an Engineering Technical Associate LEOT (Laser Electro-Optics Technician). You will apply innovative technical expertise to the design, development, evaluation, documentation, modification, maintenance, troubleshooting, planning and operations support of Optical Science Laser Facility (OSL) for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate.  You may have a technical lead role and will perform as the Responsible Individual (RI) for optical target diagnostics fielded in the facility. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the 337.1 or 339.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide advanced Laser Electro-Optics technical and design integration support to scientists, engineers, and designers in support of the Optical Science Laser Facility.
- Develop original solutions to establish or modify guidelines, techniques and procedures for optical target diagnostics, to choose appropriate work methods and set priorities.
- Schedule and prepare for shot operations.
- Perform periodic maintenance activities on diagnostics equipment. Responsibilities include performance evaluation, calibration (offline and online), troubleshooting complex to highly technical problems, complex data analysis, data archiving, and test report preparation.
- Serve as technical contact for the Optical Science Laser Facility and its components, respond in real-time to off-normal occurrences.
- Configure various table top optical arrangements that support imaging and/or electro-optical laser-based configuration, including standard spectrometer systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at 339.2 Level
- Provide technical expertise, advice, and direction to technicians, making frequent decisions using a high degree of independent discretion and judgment.  Define project approaches and create and implement original solutions.
- Participate in and/or lead formal design review process.
- Provide highly advanced technical support relating to optical/laser systems and associated support hardware.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electronics or laser electro-optics technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience troubleshooting laser beam quality and misalignment issues.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate and apply best practice engineering techniques for optical beam path alignment in both facility operations and experimental lab environments. 
- Experience providing technical direction to others.
- Ability to make frequent decisions using independent discretion and judgment to provide original solutions to establish or modify guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
- Ability to mentor others in specific on-the-job training, with advanced technical skills.
- Advanced skills and understanding of laser technology and processes with the ability to diagnose complex diagnostic systems.
- Advanced written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at 339.2 Level
- Demonstrated highly advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
- Extensive experience troubleshooting laser beam quality and misalignment issues, evaluating and applying best practice engineering techniques for optical beam path alignment in both facility operations and/or experimental lab environments.
- Highly advanced written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills in multiple technical areas, and extensive experience providing technical direction to others.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience planning and directing work with technical objectives, estimating effort, setting milestones, and managing within designated budget.
- Experience with project management methods and tools.
- Experience with Configuration Management concepts.


 Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
