For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for an Applied Physicists/Engineers with background and experience in Accelerator Physics. You will execute a variety of accelerator-based experiments with a focus on design, optics, diagnostics, simulations, induction and other technically challenging problems. This position requires occasional travel as necessary to interact with sponsors and customers. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate.


These positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.


Essential Duties
- Independently conduct induction accelerator experiments.
- Design, calibrate, and install accelerator diagnostics and analyze data.
- Perform simulations in support of the design of accelerators and/or other experimental design and analysis.
- Write regular progress reports and prepare written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Maintain an awareness of technical literature in assigned areas.
- Adhere to the highest standards of personal and facility safety in performing tests and experiments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Independently develop, assess and provide in depth accelerator diagnostics analysis and design where problems may not be well defined.
- Serve as a primary technical contact on tasks and projects.
- Guide the completion of analysis projects and lead the design of accelerator-based experiments.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree in physics, engineering, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of accelerator physics.
- Demonstrated aptitude for new fields of physics; a record of creativity, physical insight, and breadth of understanding in applications of moderately complex physical processes.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and presentation skills necessary to author technical and scientific reports, publications, invited papers, and to deliver scientific presentations.
- Experience working effectively independently and in a multidisciplinary, team-oriented research environment.
- Demonstrated self-motivation and initiative in addressing challenging problems.
- Ability to travel as necessary to interact with collaborators, sponsors, and customer to perform experiments.
In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- PhD degree in physics, engineering, or a related field or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge
- Advanced knowledge of accelerator physics with a demonstrated record of leading top-quality research in relevant areas of physics and engineering.
- Significant experience working effectively and independently in a multidisciplinary team-oriented research environment. Advanced verbal and written communication and presentation skills necessary to author advanced technical and scientific reports, publications, invited papers, and to deliver scientific presentations

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with the analysis of accelerator experiments and beam diagnostics.
- Experience simulating accelerator performance.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
