For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an Electronics Technologist/Senior Electronics Technologist.  You will provide technical support for the Target Diagnostics Group within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate.  NIF is a 24/7 operational facility and may occasionally require overtime, shift, and/or weekends to accomplish goals.  This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the 531.2 or 531.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide general assembly, fabrication, development, and recommend modifications to basic electronic circuits and system designs.
- Work from sketches, drawings, electronic schematics, verbal or written instructions, and solve problems to the sub-system or component level.
- Update instructional guides for repairing, calibrating, fielding, and maintaining equipment and systems.
- Provide general electronics technical support using appropriate electronics test methods and test equipment.
- Diagnose, debug, test, evaluate, design, upgrade, maintain, and repair moderately complex electronics systems, instrumentation, controls, data acquisition, and test equipment; including test and build cables and other electronics fabrications.
- Acquire and analyze basic data and test results using known performance parameters to report results and identify problems.
- Contribute to moderately complex preliminary design concepts and engineering decision process.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 531.3 Level
- Establish circuit or systems parameters using advanced electronics circuitry, scientific knowledge, engineering principles, and mathematical calculations.  Write or interpret specifications used in crafting, maintaining, and calibrating complex electronic systems, chassis, or components.
- Acquire and analyze complex preliminary data during design or prototyping of components, systems, or equipment, identify problems, and establish or modify guidelines, techniques and procedures.
- Lead daily work scope activities of other technicians.

Qualifications
- Associate's degree in electronics technology or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Intermediate skills, knowledge, and abilities of electronic circuits and systems.
- Experience working in electronics troubleshooting, an R&D laboratory, or production electronics environment.
- Experience with fabrication of cables, test boxes, and fixturing.
- Ability to apply general electronic and/or electro-optic knowledge to a breadth of applications and/or systems.
- Experience in safe work and business practices.
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
In Addition at the 531.3 Level
- Advanced understanding and experience in electronics technology and background in both theory and design and ability to apply electronic knowledge to a breadth of electronic circuits and systems.
- High-level technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve complex problems.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, feedback, and teamwork skills and abilities, and experience providing technical direction to others.

Desired Qualifications 
- Experience in the testing and operation of X-ray target diagnostic systems.
- Experience with operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of X-Ray sources.
- Experience with high-speed, high-voltage pulsed systems.

 

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
