For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Scientific Technologist/Sr. Scientific Technologist. You will provide radioanalytical analyses of samples using a wide variety of complex laboratory techniques and equipment.  Additionally, you will maintain, operate, and calibrate equipment as well as perform radioanalytical analyses within a strict quality assurance framework for the Radiological Measurements Laboratory (RML). This position is in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the 502.2 or 502.3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
- Receive and analyze high sample load and sample throughput using a radioanalytical measurement techniques and instrumentation as prescribed by approved RML procedures.
- Conduct radiological measurements and/or other tasks as assigned by the Subject Matter Expert (SME).
- Maintain, operate and calibrate RML laboratory equipment as prescribed by approved RML procedures within a strict Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) framework.
- Responsible for ensuring that the throughput of samples in the RML is maintained at an acceptable level.
- Generate and maintain records of RML operations and radioanalytical results.
- Provide laboratory services in a proactive manner that seamlessly meets the needs of LLNL's radiological and nuclear facilities.
- Identify moderately complex problems and anomalies and suggest corrective actions and solutions, effectively communicating with group members, scientists, engineers, skilled technical personnel and laboratory customers. 
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 502.3 Level
- Independently perform complex radiological measurements analyses and identify and solve complex radioanalytical problems as they arise.
- Independently identify and develop procedural efficiencies in order to increase sample throughput and overall laboratory productivity.
- Develop and maintain equipment maintenance schedules and laboratory supply inventories.
 
Qualifications
- Associate degree in physical sciences or related field with some related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment with intermediate knowledge of and experience using a variety of laboratory instrument and equipment. Willingness to work with radioactive materials and radioactive sealed sources.
- Demonstrated ability to write and follow technical procedures effectively. Demonstrated ability to report results and identify problems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ES&H rules and regulations, QA/QC guidelines, and experience implementing QA/QC processes and programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work well on multiple assignments and balance priorities, with attention-to-detail and organizational skills to track analysis results.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively present, explain and communicate moderately complex technical information to all levels of personnel and management.
-Working knowledge of computers and maintaining electronic records.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people, including effective interpersonal skills.
In Addition at the 502.3 Level
- Experience with complex laboratory instrumentation, including calibration fundamentals. Knowledge of radiation fundamentals.
- Experience working with and analyzing/interpreting complex data from analytical instrumentation.
- Experience in writing technical procedures.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with sealed radioactive sources.
- Experience with general computer systems and database/IT systems (e.g., Oracle).

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.  In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  L-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
