For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an analyst to undertake analysis that supports development of a range of innovative energy, emissions mitigation, and carbon dioxide removal technologies being developed at LLNL. You will use techno-economic analysis (TEA) and lifecycle assessment (LCA) tools to assess these technologies, as well as competing technologies, and identify the ways they could be optimized for various applications. You will work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers developing and analyzing ways to avoid harmful climate change and provide the energy options for the future. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Apply techno-economic and lifecycle assessment tools to technologies to evaluate their economic and environmental performance, as well as opportunities for improvement.
- Apply basic engineering fundamentals to evaluate early-stage energy technologies.
- Document efforts in technical reports and presentations.
- Contribute to the execution of technical projects and fulfillment of organizational objectives as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Contribute to the conception and design of technical projects and development of tools to address defined problems.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at conferences, seminars, and meetings.
- Travel as required to coordinate research with collaborators and visit field sites.

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Civil or Environmental Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Fundamental knowledge in one or more of the following key areas: thermodynamics, chemistry, lifecycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, analytic and computational modeling and simulation.
- Proficiency with general purpose modeling tools, such as Matlab, Maple or Mathmatica; and statistical analysis tools such as R.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently under general direction within the scope of an assignment and use independent judgment in determining methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Master’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Civil or Environmental Engineering, or related field.
- Comprehensive knowledge of lifecycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, energy policy analysis, analytic and computational modeling and simulation.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to present and explain technical information to non-technical audiences and provide advice to management.

Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with advanced manufacturing processes (e.g. 3D printing).
- Demonstrated ability to prepare manuscripts and publish papers in the peer-reviewed literature.
