For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support facility and utility design and installation projects within the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences Directorate (NIF&PS). NIF provides the scientific community with an unprecedented capability for studying materials at extreme pressures, temperatures, and densities and it is supported by a wide variety of support facilities. You will provide technical expertise for new mechanical and facility systems to build out new or reconfigured lab and other facility spaces as well as maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades to existing systems.  You will have opportunities to work on the entire lifecycle of mechanical and facility systems.  This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the TSS.2 or TSS.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Perform mechanical engineering facility design and installation support for new facility systems as well as maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades of existing facility systems.
- Develop and implement maintenance programs as well as troubleshoot equipment issues for mechanical systems in 24/7 operational facilities.
- Perform mechanical system calculations, including fluid dynamics evaluations, thermal balancing calculations, HVAC sizing, and control system optimization.
- Perform mechanical design of cryogenic and pressurized gas systems.
- Design system enhancements to increase reliability and maintainability.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the TSS.3 Level
- Independently develop designs of mechanical and facility systems.
- Apply system engineering processes to define requirements and manage risk.
- Lead formal and informal design reviews.

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- California certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent certification in another state.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with mechanical and facility system performance, including pressures, temperatures, and flows.
- Experience with cryogenic liquid and pressurized gas systems.
- Experience with procedures, work control, and configuration management.
- Experience working effectively in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment, which includes working with scientists, engineers, technicians, and designers.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the TSS.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience with mechanical and facility systems, including working knowledge of standards and applicable building codes.
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience with mechanical control systems, such as Industrial Controls or HVAC controls.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to lead technical discussions in a team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Certified Reliability Leader or other maintenance professional certification.
- Experience with NFPA, SMACNA, and other industrial facility codes.
- Experience with cryogenic liquid and pressurized gas regulations.
- Experience with the DDC or Industrial Controls and development environment or similar package; experience with cleanroom operations.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
