For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an Engineering Technical Associate/Senior Engineering Associate. You will apply innovative technical expertise for LLNL’s Enhanced Capability for Sub-Critical Experiment (ECSE) efforts. You will provide advanced technical electronics design, fabrication, evaluation, testing, review, and documentation of a wide variety of complex high-voltage, high-current, and fast-switching pulse power research and development projects. The ECSE effort encompasses multiple DOE Management and Operating (M&O) contractors and industry partners. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate.
 
This position will be filled at either the 337.1 or 339.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
- Apply innovated technical expertise and technical solutions for experimental work in a specialized R&D facility to develop, test, diagnose, troubleshoot, evaluate, upgrade and maintain complex high voltage, high current, and fast switching pulse power systems.
- Oversee fabrication support with construction and development of specialized electronics and pulsed high current and voltage systems.
- Independently perform experimental tests and measurements.
- Interpret and analyze schematics and operating manuals.
- Maintain, test, calibrate, and repair of advanced electronics circuits, instrumentation, and control, as well as diagnostic systems.
- Analyze complex preliminary design concepts and engineering decision process.
- Analyze complex preliminary technical data design of components, systems, or equipment.
- Report data and test analysis, identify problems, and suggest original solutions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition at the 339.2 level
- Collaborate with Project Leaders and Managers to identify necessary personnel and technical resources to effectively support program missions.
- Provide technical leadership for a diverse team of designers, associates, and technicians in support of programmatic experimental campaigns.
- Develop, test, diagnose, troubleshoot, evaluate, upgrade, and maintain highly complex unique high voltage, high current equipment and systems.
 
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electronics technology or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Advanced skills, knowledge, and abilities in electronics technology including theory, design, and component to system level understanding of electronics.
- Significant experience with testing and operation of high voltage pulsed power equipment.
- Significant experience handling multiple projects and demonstrated ability to leverage work through others.
- Significant experience making independent decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
- Advanced understanding of unique fabrication and modification of highly specialized parts and subassemblies.
- Advanced mechanical skills to assemble hardware.
- Advanced verbal and written communication, feedback, and presentation skills, as well as effective interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Ability to travel.
In addition at the 339.2 level:
- Extensive experience with classic pulsed power technologies including spark gaps, thyratrons, Marx generators, blumleins, and nonlinear magnetics.
- Highly advanced understanding and expertise with Linear Induction Accelerators.
- Highly advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively to present, explain, and advise sponsors, management, and collaborators.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Experience writing test programs with Labview.
- Knowledge of high vacuum systems operations.
- Knowledge of LLNL drafting, procurement, and fabrication process.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
