For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct charged-particle or neutron activation experiments and perform modeling and simulation of experimental configurations and results from irradiations of materials at ion-beam accelerator and nuclear research reactor facilities.  You will actively participate in the research to distinguish radionuclide signatures of activated materials and model detector responses.  This position is in the Safeguards, Nonproliferation & Response group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research on nuclear science topics of relevance to nuclear security and safeguards.
- Develop and model experimental irradiation procedures.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Perform sample and data analysis and evaluate/interpret results.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Maintain and establish laboratory protocols and experimental procedures.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in nuclear chemistry, nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, radiochemistry, or related field.
- Experience in nuclear spectroscopy and radiation detection techniques and modeling of detector response.
- Experience in designing, assembling, and running nuclear science experiments based on radiochemical or nuclear chemistry methods.
- Ability to safely work with radioactive materials (>1 microCurie), including alpha and beta-gamma emitters.
- Ability to develop independent research projects leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience in experimental nuclear science to help solve a variety of programmatic challenges in national security, with experience in data analysis and interpretation.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with MCNP, GEANT6, Adobe Office Suite software, Microsoft Office Suite software.
- Experience in experimental modeling/Monte-Carlo modeling.
- Knowledgeable in nuclear decay schemes, spectroscopy, and nuclear data.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
