For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research on materials and reactor design and fabrication for microbial electromethanogenesis. You will actively participate in electrode materials and reactor characterization and optimization, and directly interact with project team members and outside collaborators. This position is in the Functional Materials Synthesis and Integration group of the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research on bulk and surface electrode properties, including morphology, composition, reproducibility and current density.
- Develop and tune reactor component (cathode, anode, membrane) geometry and composition to reduce mass transfer limitations and reach target performance requirements while minimizing costs.
- Design, construct, and characterize all components of custom electrochemical reactors.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Bioengineering, Engineeringor related field.
- Demonstrated understanding of electrosynthesis, electrochemistry, reactor design, process design, or catalysis.
- Experience with electrochemical cell, fluidic device, or reactor fabrication.
- Experience with design optimization or process evaluation in chemical or energy systems.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques and execution.
- Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience in designing, fabricating, and testing electrosynthesis cells.
- Experience with computational fluid dynamics or finite element codes, e.g. COMSOL, OpenFOAM, FLUENT, StarCCM, and/or CAD tools.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
