Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in data science. You will contribute as a member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of computer scientists and engineers who research, develop, and integrate state-of-the-art algorithms, software, hardware, and computer systems solutions to challenging data analysis problems. You will also have the freedom to explore your own research interests. This position is in the Computation Directorate within the Global Security Computing Application Division (GS-CAD).

Essential Duties
- Research, design and implement new data analysis techniques.
- Collaborate with scientists and researchers in one or more of the following areas: data intensive applications, text processing, graph analysis, machine learning, statistical learning, information visualization, low-level data management, data integration, data streaming, scientific data mining, data fusion, massive-scale knowledge fusion using semantic graphs, database technology, programming models for scalable parallel computing, application performance modeling and analysis, scalable tool development, novel architectures (e.g., FPGAs, GPUs and embedded systems), and HPC architecture simulation and evaluation.
- Solve abstract complex problems and/or ideas and convert them into usable algorithms and software modules.
- Document research by publishing papers in peer-reviewed media and presenting papers within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Contribute to group grant proposals, including proposal presentations and preparation of proposals that will provide future research opportunities in the field.
- Participate in the establishment of future research directions.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and will interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent Ph.D. in computer science, mathematics, or a related field.
- Knowledge of one or more of the following: high performance computing, scientific data analysis, statistical analysis, machine learning, deep learning, and big data technologies.
- Knowledge of C++, Java, Python, R, or Matlab and experience developing applications in Linux or Windows environments.
- Demonstrated ability to perform independent research.
- Experience with data analysis algorithms, data management approaches, relational databases, and machine learning algorithms.
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multi-disciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
- Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills necessary to work effectively in a team environment.
- Experience in the identification of complex problems and solutions in a creative and timely manner.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of data analytic environments, such as Spark or Scala.
- Experience working with biological data sets.
- Experience with parallel programming, such as MPI, OpenMP, UPC, or GPUs.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
