For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Senior Defense Systems Engineer in the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Directorate. You will participate in nuclear weapon Life Extension Programs (LEPs) and other future capability planning activities. This position is in the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principal Directorate and will report to the Program Manager for the W80-4 Life Extension Program.
This position will be filled at either the SES.4 or SES.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties 
- Manage project interfaces and deployment interfacing with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Create innovative analytical frameworks and evaluate competing characteristics to determine solutions that most effectively meet stakeholder objectives; provide decision insight to customers and stakeholders in highly complex problem areas.
- Provide technical leadership to projects; maintain and ensure quality standards for deliverables, publications and presentations; leverage team members’ skills to successfully complete highly complex projects, by ensuring excellence in execution of technical work in the program.
- Advise and influence senior management and external stakeholders on highly complex technical concepts utilizing expert-level communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills to effectively.
- Frequently mentor other personnel and actively recruit staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.5 Level
- Represent the laboratory to the sponsor and stakeholders and serve on external committees and act as senior technical expert on large programs/projects.
- Champion large projects and multi-laboratory efforts to positively impact the team’s long-term goals and objectives.
- Successfully utilize existing work, internal resources, and partnerships to develop innovative capabilities to increase the impact of LLNL and lead the development of project portfolios.
- Master's Degree in Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience in U.S. nuclear weapon systems, strategies and policies.
- Proven success delivering high-quality, impactful technical products; significant experience successfully managing and leading multidisciplinary project teams.
- Demonstrated success growing programs through proposal writing and sponsor engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and collaborate with other personnel in achieving project objectives; demonstrated strength in partnering with other laboratories and outside organizations.
- Expert knowledge and experience as a project coordinator or principal investigator of projects with competing priorities, loosely defined deliverables, and high visibility.
- Expert verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate with internal and external teams and advise and influence senior management and external sponsors.
- Ability to travel off-site for sponsor and customer interaction.

In Addition, at the SES.5 Level
- Relevant post-MA/MS work experience on nuclear nonproliferation or nuclear safeguards and security.
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience in regional politics and national security as they relate to the proliferation of nuclear weapons and other WMD and corresponding control regimes.
- Experience and demonstrated expertise in the collection and analysis of information on foreign nuclear programs.
- Advanced working knowledge of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the IAEA safeguards system.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Engineering or related field.
- Significant experience working with the Department of Energy, Department of Defense or other relevant government sponsors.
- Successful track record of crafting new capabilities and catalyzing innovation to impact the long-term direction of an organization.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. 


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
