For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a field carpenter. You will perform carpentry modifications, alterations, and maintenance services to LLNL facilities and utilities. You will perform basic journey-level skills in the carpenter trade, including construction and repair. This position is in the Central Facilities and Infrastructure (F&I) Department.
Essential Duties
- Perform construction and repair of foundations, floors, walls, ceilings, roofs, interior and exterior finish, and doors and windows, which may include climbing and working at heights, the use of materials, power tools, and hand tools utilized in the carpenter trade.
- Erect, dismantle, and inspect scaffolding and work platforms.
- Work on routine assignments.  Make decisions jointly with coworkers that involve techniques, guidelines, and procedures that are well defined.
- Lay out work within close tolerance and analyze task assignments for details in fabrication and installation of materials and cabinets/case work.
- Work with power actuated tools (pneumatic tools) and operate equipment such as motor vehicles; forklifts and overhead cranes.
- Provide strong customer service and adhere to deadlines.
- Prepare standard reports, permit requirements, deficiency forms, and preventive maintenance work requests.
- Drive motor vehicles; operate forklift and overhead cranes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Completion of apprenticeship training program and/or full-time, journey-level work experience in the carpenter trade, including proficiency in the use of hand tools and power tools of the trade.
- Basic journey level skills, knowledge and abilities in the carpenter trade including finish carpentry work, construction and repair of foundation, floors, walls, ceilings, roofs, and interior and exterior finishing, doors, and windows.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze task assignments for details in fabrication and installation of materials.
- Demonstrated ability to learn how to erect, dismantle, and inspect scaffolding and work platforms.
- Demonstrated customer service skills, effective communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as a team member interfacing well with others.
- Demonstrated effective writing and basic computer skills.
- Basic knowledge of ES&H and OSHA laws and regulations.
- Possess a valid California Driver’s License and ability to work scheduled and/or emergency overtime and to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protective equipment.
Desired Qualifications
- Journey level experience in fabrication of cabinets and case work.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:  This listing has multiple openings; to be filled as Career Indefinite or as At Will appointments.  Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for these positions.  Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).
