For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Central Office Technician. You will support the LivIT program by maintaining the telecommunications power systems that are throughout the Livermore site and other various locations. The position is within the Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) Division in the Computation Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the 531.2 or 531.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Provide general telecommunication/power technical support to operational, engineering, and technical staff to facilitate and provide telecommunication services for LLNL and other off-site locations such as Site 300 and ensure operational reliability to all LLNL facilities.
- Install, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot central office facility power infrastructure.
- Maintain, install, and make changes to the power systems located in multiple locations which includes rectifiers, batteries, inverters, -48v power distribution equipment, equipment rack AC and DC equipment, cabling, grounding and bonding.
- Independently perform a multitude of tasks including monitoring performance, troubleshooting moderately complex problems, and providing technical support related to the power systems that support telecommunications equipment and other associated hardware/software platforms.
- Operate power diagnostic test equipment that include multi-meters during the installation, upgrade and troubleshooting of power related issues.
- Perform wiring on distribution frames to include wire wrap and punch down.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 531.3 Level
- Provide advanced technical support of complex power systems and author operational procedures and technical documents.
- Identify, analyze, and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex challenges using independent creativity and judgment.
- Design, configure and implement complex power systems.
- Associate’s degree in telecommunications, electronics, computer maintenance or network technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience working in a central office environment including, wiring frames, securing racks, cable distribution, power, and environmental controls.
- Ability to read and follow engineering notes, sketches, drawings, specifications, and procedures.
- Ability to operate hand/power tools, climb ladders, and lift 50 pounds.
- In-depth knowledge of grounding and bonding.
- Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Valid California driver license.
In Addition at the 531.3 Level
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems.
- Advanced level knowledge of complex power systems with the ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.
- Effective written, verbal, feedback, and presentation communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of DC and AC power systems, UPS, batteries, rectifiers, inverters, power distribution panels.
- Knowledge of power cable sizing, standards and procedures.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
