For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Deputy Director of Security Technologies (DDST). You will collaborate with the Director of Security and the Principal Deputy Director to provide leadership and direction to the Security Organization (SO) with approximately 300 employees and an annual budget of approximately $100 million. You will oversee a high volume of technical issues associated with the development, application and maintenance of various security measures that are components of LLNL’s overall security and protection strategy at two sites.You will ensure uninterrupted protection of Laboratory assets from a broad range of physical and technical security threats that may cause unacceptable adverse impacts on national security, the health and safety of the DOE, contractors, the public and/or the environment. This position is in the Security Organization.
Essential Duties
- Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) to advise and manage strategic initiatives and technical security issues with SO/LLNL/LLNS senior management, DOE/NNSA, and other NNSA contractors.  Influence multiple customers, stakeholders and peers within all LLNL Programs, other sites across the DOE complex, and DOE HQ.
­- Develop and implement strategic planning, effective and compliant training programs, policy and quality assurance initiatives as required by DOE/NNSA and LLNS, especially those of an engineering or technical nature.
­- Manage the development and integration of policies and procedures to provide the optimum protection strategy for diverse institutional assets in compliance with federal and state regulations, LLNS performance criteria, DOE/NNSA Orders and LLNL institutional requirements.
­- Responsible for ensuring formal documentation, practices, and actions to implement disciplined and structured operations that support mission success and promote worker, public, and environmental protection by minimizing the likelihood and consequences of human fallibility or technical and organizational system failures.
­- Manage, coordinate and respond to internal and external audits, assessments and inspections.
­- Manage a diverse portfolio of technical projects, including the application, deployment and improvement of the ARGUS security system.
­- Manage personnel, including technical staff leaders, and performance of SO and matrix personnel assigned within the respective areas, including career development.
­- Perform other duties as assigned.
­- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
­- Significant experience leading a large multi-disciplinary team (e.g., >100 employees), contributing to the operational preparedness, emergency management, strategic planning, and direction of a Security Program and managing multimillion dollar program portfolios.
­- Significant experience effectively influencing, presenting to and interacting with senior management and external sponsors.
­- Demonstrated advanced project management skills as applied to successful completion of high-risk and high visibility deliverables on schedule and within budget.
­- Significant experience working in a tactical/operational environment under highly prescriptive, demanding, multi-tasking conditions and preparing and presenting proposals for technology development or deployment projects.  
­- Expert communication, facilitation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills necessary to direct an organization, lead innovative research, build cooperative multi-disciplinary teams, and advise and interact with management and customers/sponsors.
Desired Qualifications
­- Knowledge of applicable LLNL, DOE/NNSA, state/federal laws associated with safeguards and security.
­- Experience in a military or paramilitary organization, government/private security agency and/or experience in the interpretation, development, and implementation of physical security systems including access control and intrusion detection technology consistent with DOE regulations.
­- Advanced knowledge of embedded software development tools and technologies.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
