For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an Electric Utility Power System Engineer.  You will perform a variety of maintenance, operations, engineering, design, construction, and modification activities on the transmission, substation, and distribution facilities, (115kV, 13.8kV, 12kV, and 4kV), serving the LLNL Main Site and Site 300.  This position is in the Electrical Maintenance Division of the Central Facilities & Infrastructure Department.
This position will be filled at either the TSS.1 or TSS.2 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Provide engineering analysis and design in support of projects being performed to improve the electric utility systems.
- Provide engineering support for electric utility system load-flow, short circuit, protection, arc-flash, and economic studies related to electric utility system improvement projects.
- Prepare equipment test reports, as-built switchgear drawings, system one-line diagrams, and associated system drawings.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of equipment maintenance and system operations procedures and standards.
- Contribute to the maintenance, programming, and improvement of the electric utility SCADA system including communications components.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the TSS.2 Level
- Develop detailed engineering designs and construction packages for electric utility system equipment upgrade and replacement projects.
- Provide engineering solutions to a diverse range of moderately complex electric utility system issues and/or problems.
- Provide recommendations to electric utility personnel on maintenance and operations issues.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (power systems concentration) or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Knowledge of fundamental concepts, techniques, practices, and procedures for completing tasks or projects in electric utility system engineering.
- Knowledge of and experience using programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Matlab, AutoCAD, SKM, LabView, and any others relevant to engineering.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills with self-drive, persistence, attention to detail and the desire to seek and share knowledge.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Familiarity with computers, computer networks, microprocessor-based relays, control systems, SCADA systems, and Cybersecurity as it pertains to Industrial Control Systems.
In Addition at the TSS.2 Level
- Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of California or reciprocity from another state within 36 months.
- Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, techniques, practices, and procedures for completing tasks or projects in electric utility system engineering.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code, NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, and/or electric utility system analysis software (SKM Power Tools preferred) to perform load-flow, fault-duty, protective device coordination, arc-flash, harmonic, transient, and motor starting studies.
- M.S. degree Electrical Engineering (power systems).
- Troubleshooting experience with computers, network, software, electrical wiring, schematics, or other.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.  Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidiomycosis).
