For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher. You will work with a team that is developing liquid metal additive manufacturing/3D printing technologies. You will participate in all aspects of developing and operating a liquid metal droplet-on-demand printing apparatus for high temperature metals. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.
 
Essential Duties
- Conduct research in and development of one or more of the following areas: metal additive manufacturing, liquid metal rheology and interfacial properties determination, droplet-on-demand print head design and operation, characterization of printed metal components, advanced concepts of controlling metal oxidation during printing, and assemble bench-scale experimental apparatuses for material properties characterization and printing.
- Design, implement, and analyze techniques in one or more of the above areas.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or related field.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: material characterization, metallurgy, metal casting, inkjet/droplet-on-demand printing, measuring interfacial properties, rheology, microfluidics, and metal additive manufacturing.
- Demonstrated ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Demonstrated ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with analytic and computational modeling and simulation, and data analysis.
- Experience with programming languages such as: LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, C/C++.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:  This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
