For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for Applied Statisticians with expertise in computational statistics and statistical software development, Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling, Survival and Longitudinal analysis, Graphical models, Low-rank embedding, and constrained optimization. You will contribute to programmatic efforts to develop and apply advanced statistical analytic methods in support of Laboratory mission objectives. You will work independently to research and develop new statistical techniques to meet data analysis challenges. These positions are in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Scope, plan, and formulate advanced statistical modeling efforts for physical, engineering, and computational systems relevant to national security.
- Identify and define complex problems stemming from national security research, propose advanced analysis methodologies, collect and analyze data, and write reports documenting results.
- Adapt and apply existing statistical methods and theories to new problem domains.
- Develop, implement, validate, and document independently specialized statistical analysis tools utilizing high-level programming languages.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- PhD in Statistics or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive programming skills in at least one prototyping language R/Matlab/Python, as well as one of C/C++/FORTRAN to enable high performance statistical computation.
- Significant experience developing and applying advanced statistical/machine learning models and algorithms for one or more of the following areas: Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling, Survival and Longitudinal analysis, Statistical software development, Graphical models.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Advanced knowledge in fields of application.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, document work, prepare and present successful proposals and high-quality research papers, and provide advice to management.
- Ability to travel as necessary to collaborate with industrial and academic partners.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with large-scale computational modeling, including parallel computing frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to obtain subject matter expertise in multiple application domains.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
