For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Polymer Engineer. You will conduct research and development activities in the areas of polymer processing, polymer characterization, and other materials process development to support various projects. You will conduct experiments to support process refinement and materials characterization for various funded projects. This position is in the Ceramics and Polymers Group of the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Plan, organize, and coordinate technical research and development and programmatic activities.
- Work independently in areas such as materials development, materials processing, and materials characterization to resolve process problems and improve or optimize the materials resulting from materials processing, including graded density materials.
- Develop academic and industrial contacts, disseminate results and methods developed, and stay current on the polymers development/characterization methods.
- Provide technical direction and mentoring to other staff, technicians, and engineering associates as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering or polymer science field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Knowledge and experience in conducting and interpreting experiments related to characterization of polymer properties and polymer processing, and analysis of such data.
- Experience and knowledge of various polymer characterization techniques including rheological characterization of polymers.
- Experience writing reports and documenting results.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience in broad range of polymer materials properties, processing, and characterization.
- Experience developing research proposals and independently executing technical projects.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:  This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
