Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to play a major role in development of surrogate debris materials for nuclear forensic programs.  You will develop techniques for producing isotopes at relevant quantities using appropriate neutron and charged-particle reactions at accelerator facilities, associated radiochemical separations methods for isolating isotopes of interest, and incorporation into solid debris matrices via additive manufacturing for subsequent evaluation via various analytical techniques.  This position is in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

Essential Duties
- Develop experimental methods, separation techniques, and analysis approaches needed to collect and isolate radioactive isotopes produced at accelerator facilities.
- Develop experimental methods for uniformly distributing radionuclides within solid matrices including the use of additive manufacturing.
- Perform sample and data analysis and interpret results.
- Document research, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in nuclear chemistry, nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, radiochemistry, or related field.
- Experience in designing, assembling, and running nuclear science experiments based on radiochemical or nuclear chemistry methods.
- Ability to safely work with radioactive materials (> 1 microCurie), including alpha and beta-gamma emitters.
- Ability to develop experimental methods, separation techniques, and analysis approaches needed to collect and isolate radioactive isotopes produced at accelerator facilities.
- Experience with radionuclide separation methods, such as liquid-liquid extraction, ion exchange chromatography or solvent extraction.
- Experience with charged-particle and gamma-ray detectors and radiation counting and their associated data analyses.
- Experience in experimental nuclear science to help solve a variety of programmatic challenges in national security, with experience in data analysis and interpretation.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
