For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an experienced Project Engineer for state-of-the-art laser projects within the NIF and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. You will lead a team of engineers, scientists and technicians responsible for delivering an important new technical capability.  In addition, you will provide project oversight, chair technical reviews, or review project plans as needed throughout the NIF&PS Department of Defense Technologies (DODT) organization. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide technical leadership to team members in the execution of their work scope with a focus on defining, developing, and deploying critical systems and components.
- Maintain and ensure quality standards for deliverables and engineering rigor; leverage team members’ skills to successfully complete highly complex projects, by ensuring excellence in execution of technical work in the program.
- Apply project management processes to deliver high-priority objectives by defining requirements, determining Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and scope definitions, time-phased budgets, contingency estimates, resource-loaded schedule, earned value management and other project controls, using a graded approach.
- Employ risk management processes including risk registers, mitigation planning and other systems engineering processes, according to a risk-graded approach.
- Collaborate with line organizations within NIF&PS to negotiate personnel resources for projects.
- Manage interfaces with other LLNL organizations including procurement, construction management, and ES&H.
- Plan and execute formal design reviews, champion Integrated Product Review Board (IPRB) and Work Authorization Point (WAP) review processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level    
- Assess strategic technical needs for investments in technology infrastructure; lead technical initiatives in advancing state of the art engineering capabilities.
- Successfully utilize existing work, internal resources, and partnerships to develop innovative capabilities to increase the impact of LLNL and lead the development of project portfolios.
- Provide project management solutions to highly unusual, complex, and/or sensitive issues/technical problems where the solution path is not known ahead of time.

- Bachelors’ degree in Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
-Subject matter expertise in highly complex systems design and analysis and significant experience in project planning and highly complex technical leadership.
- Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems and leading corrective actions where necessary.
- Subject matter expert knowledge of and significant experience with Project Management Controls and Systems Engineering processes and functions such as configuration management, risk management, requirements development, earned value management, milestone and schedule management, contingency allocation processes, scheduling, and interface control.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to lead a team, present/explain technical knowledge and provide advice to management.  
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas: precision engineering, advanced manufacturing, optomechanical systems, or thermal management systems
- Extensive experience championing large dynamic projects and multi-laboratory efforts that positively affected the organization’s long-term goals and objectives and leveraging existing work, internal resources, and partnerships that resulted in successfully developing new project portfolios.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with lasers and optics, particularly laser system engineering and with qualification of systems for flight and/or advancing the TRL level of systems from breadboard/brassboard to flight prototype.
- Experience using formal earned-value-management systems.
- Project Management Institute certification.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
