For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for a Mechanical Technician. You will provide technical support to operations of new and on-going experiments involving engineering evaluation, fabrication, assembly, and documentation. The scope of the work may include programmatic support of experiments at various LLNL locations. These positions are in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.
Essential Duties
- Provide basic technical support to engineering, scientific, and technical staff to plan and conduct experiments at LLNL and other off-site locations.
- Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble basic mechanical components and systems, using work control process and procedure requirements.
- Operate experimental and diagnostic equipment and perform data recovery in the execution of experiments.
- Apply basic knowledge of relevant technologies, including non-destructive evaluation, material characterization, and vacuum technology. May include interpreting and utilizing laboratory equipment to solve hardware or system malfunctions.
- Maintain systems documentation and experimental records.
- Perform facility related and technical functions such as maintenance, testing, and upgrades to equipment.
- Follow and adhere to written, operational, and safety procedures, including practicing good housekeeping in experimental, work, and office areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Engineering, Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Basic understanding of engineering hardware design, including knowledge of computer aided drafting/design software.
- Experience with experimental and testing processes.
- Basic knowledge of material fabrication processes and methods, including experience in machining using lathes, mills, band saws, and other basic machine shop tools as well as welding, casting, and forming.
- Experience in mechanical measurement, inspection methods, and mechanical assembly of components.
- Knowledge of office computer software, including word processing and spreadsheets necessary to produce supportive documentation and graphics.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills and abilities, working effectively with high level technical, engineering, and scientific staff.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
