For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in data science who will research, develop, and integrate state-of-the-art algorithms and software to solve challenging data analysis problems. You will contribute as a member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of computer scientists and engineers working in close collaboration, while having the freedom to explore your own research interests. This position is in the Computation Directorate within the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division.
 
Essential Duties
- Research, design and implement new data analysis techniques.
- Collaborate with scientists and researchers to solve abstract complex problems and converting the solutions into usable algorithms and software modules.
- Collaborate with external DOE and/or DOD sponsors, apply research results to sponsor problems, write reports to the sponsors and sponsor’s community.
- Document research by publishing papers in peer-reviewed media and presenting papers within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Contribute to group grant proposals, including proposal presentations and preparation of proposals that will provide future research opportunities in the field.
- Participate in the establishment of future research directions.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
- Recent Ph.D. in computer science, mathematics, or a related field.
- Expertise in data analysis, data-centric computing, or related field.
- Demonstrated ability to perform independent research.
- Experience with data analysis algorithms, machine learning algorithms, data management approaches, and relational databases.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multi-disciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
- Experience in the identification of complex problems and solutions in a creative and timely manner.
 
Desired Qualifications (optional)
- Knowledge of C/C++.
- Knowledge of Python or other scripting languages.
- Knowledge of data analytic environments, such as Spark or Scala.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.
 
If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
 

Note:   This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
