For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Real-Time Controls Software Developer to develop adaptive optics (AO) control systems for high energy lasers.  Your contributions will support advancement of real-time computing and other advanced technologies for national security missions.  This position is in the Computation Directorate’s National Ignition Facility (NIF) Computing Division, matrixed to the NIF and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Principal Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level, depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 Essential Duties
- Design, implement, and test real-time control software utilized to control deformable mirrors in adaptive optics (AO) systems for lasers.
- Perform software engineering using real-time analysis, design, and programming techniques, and participate in moderately complex formal and informal design and code reviews.
- Collaborate with project stakeholders, including engineers, scientists, and operations staff, during the software development process.
- Contribute to the fulfillment of scope delivery on schedule to meet program milestones.
- Provide solutions to moderately complex hardware/software integration problems.
- Contribute to the fulfillment of technical projects and organizational objectives, applying configuration management and document interface requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Exert significant influence on strategy and future direction for controls software.
- Set specific technical strategy and direction for self and others during formal and informal design and code reviews.
- Mentor team members in areas of expertise.

- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience with the software engineering process: generation of requirements and design documents, coding under configuration control, and integration.
- Knowledge of real-time operating systems and/or real-time applications development.
- Experience programming in an object-oriented programming language such as Java, C#, or C++.
- Experience programming in OpenCL and/or CUDA.
- Experience developing multi-threaded/multi-tasking applications with GPU-CPU and/or FPGA frameworks and data management resources.
- Proficient communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of personnel and collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Significant experience developing multi-threaded/multi-tasking applications with GPU-CPU and/or FPGA frameworks and data management resources.
- Significant experience working in a UNIX or Linux development environment.
- Significant experience in hardware control including debugging with hardware instrumentation.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
