For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to perform research on high-order finite element methods for thermal radiative transfer (TRT). You will develop and implement new algorithms for efficiently and robustly solving the deterministic TRT equations on high-order curved meshes. Potential topics include:SN transport sweeps on curved meshes, positivity-preserving methods that satisfy TRT’s unique constraints, physics-informed preconditioners for high-order TRT, and time-stepping methods that avoid SN transport sweeps.  This position is inthe Computation Directorate within the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division.

Essential Duties
- Develop and implement new methods for solving the TRT equations using high-order finite elements in collaboration with a multidisciplinary computational physics research team.
- Perform research in one or more areas relevant to the overall project.
- Help develop a new C++ research code to test out ideas for high-order TRT.
- Contribute to group grant proposals andprogress reports, including proposal presentations and preparation of written proposals.
- Interact with application teams to understand impact of the developed methods on real physics applications.
- Participate in the establishment of future research directions.
- Document and disseminate research and development progress via technical reports, journal publications, and presentations within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- PhD in computational science, applied mathematics, nuclear engineering/deterministic transport, or related field.
- Experience with numerical methods for deterministic transport (neutron or photon), high-order finite elements, or both.
- Demonstrated ability to perform self-directed research.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal direction and to make timely progress on complex research problems within the scope of a relevant assignment.
- Ability to work well within a team environment.
- Experience with C/C++ or Fortran.
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact in a clear and concise manner, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with C++.
- Experience with parallel programming techniques, particularly MPI, OpenMP, and/or CUDA.
- Experience with collaborative development and testing of large scientific simulation codes.

Note:   This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
