Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform research and development of finite element-based numerical algorithms targeting large-scale electromagnetic applications of interest to the US Department of Energy (DOE). You will support new and ongoing projects for advanced discretization and efficient solutions of Maxwell-type problems, e.g. arising in the study of electromagnetic wave propagation in cold plasmas.  This will involve investigation of both frequency domain and time domain solution and discretization methods based on curl-conforming finite elements, adaptive mesh refinement, high-order methods and parallel sparse solvers and scalable preconditioned iterative solvers. This position is in the Computation Directorate within the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division.

Essential Duties
- Research and develop new discretization algorithms for unstructured mesh computations, focusing on curl-conforming finite element methods for Maxwell-type problems.
- Develop efficient and scalable algorithms for solving definite and indefinite Maxwell problems relevant in the study of radio frequency (RF) waves in cold plasmas.
- Research the use of iterative solvers and preconditioners tailored to the indefinite Helmholtz operator.
- Collaborate with application teams to incorporate, evaluate and improve the performance of the new algorithms in specific applications, such as those developed in the RF-SciDAC project.
- Collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists, internally and externally, to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in conferences and workshops.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science or a related field.
- Knowledge of finite element methods for PDE discretizations on unstructured meshes.
- Knowledge of H(curl)-conforming and/or high-order finite element methods.
- Demonstrated ability to work with application scientists, and software development.
- Experience performing independent research and documenting outcome.
- Experience in developing complex C++ software in a Linux environment.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact in a clear and concise manner, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with definite and/or indefinite Maxwell problems and related discretizations.
- Experience with algebraic multigrid or similar scalable linear solvers.
- Experience with unstructured mesh refinement, or general high-order meshes.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  None.

Note:   This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
