For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a computational biologist with a specialization in machine learning.  You will work in a challenging R&D environment in support of the Laboratory's programs with expertise in machine learning, data analytics, mechanistic modeling, molecular dynamics simulations, and experimental microbiology in the area of protein function and cancer. This position will be working in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.
 
Essential Duties
- Research, develop, and apply novel machine learning, statistics, and data analysis algorithms to analyze massive data from scientific simulations, experiments, and observations and implement machine learning, statistics, and data analysis algorithms to produce integrated tools.
- Design and conduct molecular dynamics simulation campaigns to answer complex questions of biological interest.
- Effectively interact with domain experts in experimental biology.
- Develop collaborations with external partners (Universities, industry, other National Laboratories) to advance computational biology simulation and data analytic efforts.
- Develop new research activities relevant to the needs of Laboratory programs and/or external funding agencies; write proposals, secure funding, and establish independent research projects.
- Prepare written analyses and verbal briefings and present research results at national and international conferencesas well as periodic progress reports.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Interact with senior project staff and management to influence programmatic decisions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
- PhD in computer science, computational biology, applied mathematics or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience at the postdoctoral or higher level in the field of molecular simulations and one or more of machine learning, data mining, and statistics.
- Proven publication record in the fields of molecular simulations and analytics.
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience programming in C++, Python and Java in a UNIX environment.
- Significant experience in analysis of data from real problems and in implementing algorithms toward analysis of large volumes of data.
- Conceptual skills, creativity, problem-solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently address challenging problems.
- Experience in performing biological experiments with demonstrated with the ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts.
- Advanced written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deliver presentations, prepare written reports and to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
