For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to perform research and development of high-order finite element algorithms targeting heterogeneous supercomputing architectures and exascale applications. You will design, implement, analyze and test new approaches for efficient finite element assembly, evaluation, unstructured adaptive mesh refinement and other core discretization algorithms and kernels on unstructured meshes; develop software on massively parallel computers as part of the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) co-design Center for Efficient Exascale Discretizations (CEED). This position is in the Computation Directorate within the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division.
Essential Duties
- Research new high-performance finite element discretization algorithms for unstructured mesh computations, focusing on high-order finite element methods.
- Characterize and improve the performance of the numerical kernels of the high-order algorithms, e.g., expressed in terms of batched small dense tensor contractions.
- Implement and test the new methods in the CEED software, targeting high-performance on novel heterogeneous supercomputing architectures.
- Collaborate with application teams to incorporate, evaluate and improve the performance of the new algorithms in specific ECP/CEED applications.
- Collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to accomplish research goals.
- Document complex research and development progress via technical reports, journal publications, and conference presentations.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in mathematics, applied mathematics, computational science or a related field.
- Experience with high-order finite element or spectral element methods for PDE discretizations on unstructured meshes.
- Knowledge of continuous and/or discontinuous Galerkin methods.
- Experience in developing scientific software with CUDA, MPI or OpenMP.
- Demonstrated experience performing independent research and software development.
- Experience in developing complex C++ software in a Linux environment.
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact in a clear and concise manner, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with unstructured mesh refinement, or general high-order meshes.
- Experience with algebraic multigrid or similar scalable linear solvers.
- Familiarity with the MFEM finite element library.

Note: This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
